One time as when I was a kid, I made this live trap for a rat. It was a little wire cage that was laying around and a board to act as the door. The door would fall down and cover the opening to the cage if it were not for a string holding it up. Now here is where the fun part was, the string ran thru the cage and had a Ritz cracker as a link between it and to where it was tied. So, if the cracker was eaten, it would make the door fall.

Ok, since, this was kid engineering, I did not think about what the rat would do if it pushed up against the door (it was on a hinge and would open). So I never caught the rat at the barn I wanted to see, however, he did get a few crackers out of me before I gave up.

I bet I could design one today that would work. Make a door that will latch once it is closed or that cannot be pushed open from the inside. Also of note, try to put as much distance between the entrance and the cracker as possible. It would suck to get half a mouse. Finally, to use the cracker as a link, drill a small hole in the middle of it and use it as sort of a washer to join the string to whatever you are anchoring to. The cracker cannot support anything too heavy.

You could set up a deep bowl full of water anddifferent fruits and meats and stuff, and lay down a ramp leading up to it. If you're a brave soul, once the mouse runs in for the feast, all you have to do is take the ramp away. With all the water in the bowl, the mouse won't be able to get out.

Or you could try this same trick with a single piece of food, and a deep bowl or bucket, and you would need to lubricate the sides of the bowl. So, once the mouse is inside, it won't be able to climb back out.

We have had success with the plastic mousetraps that pinch together rather than the traditional mousetrap. We bait it with a piece of dry dogfood. Make sure the opening of the mousetrap faces and is right up against the wall since mice usually run along the baseboards.

Does not matter how clever you try to be
Mice can and will out-smart you every time.

If you catch any at all, they are the stupid ones.
Have you ever found a trap empty but a mouse
got caught anyway? That's because the smart
mouse came after the stupid one and ate the cheese.

Wait outside the mouse's hole and act like a piece of cheese. Then have your cat set up a Rubegoldberg type machine to trap it.
