I think u need to see Saw 1 and 2 to fully appreciate Saw 3. There are flashback scenes concerning the first two throughout the third one that may not make sense. Also, the relationship between Jigsaw and Amanda (his apprentice) is not explained sufficiently in Saw 3. The previous Saws are needed for full understanding of that.

I wouldnt say it is essential to see 1+2 first but there was a scene in saw 2 that was the setting from saw 1. They are well worth watching

Yes definately you need to watch them starting at #1. Each sequil brings back a part of the others in order for you to understand. A co-worker went to see #3 but didn't see the previous ones. So she had questions. She then went home & rented the others. She said then she understood some of the things within #3. She wished she had seen them prior to the last.

you would enjoy the third more if you saw the first two as you would know exactly why the things are happening. Excellent storyline which needs to be understood fully to appreciate wot is going on! Otherwise you may thing its just pointless blood & gore. & it really is much more than that.

you will understand the basic premise but it would be better to see 1 and 2 to fully appreciate the twisted style of the film

it'll help to explain some of the scenes in the movie, and introduce you to the main characters. But if you haven't seen them yet.... You'll still be able to follow the 3rd
