The Shawshank Redemption. I remember seeing it in a nearly empty theatre and wondering by the end of the film why it was doing so poorly (the title?) Apparently it was actually slowly building an audience through word of mouth, but got yanked from the theatres anyway. Happily, it enjoyed a second life on DVD, holding strong as the number one DVD release for months and months.

I think MnG is the only 1 (not 1%) that liked "Ishtar." That explains so much. *cough*

And Opifan is dead on with Shawshank Redemption...what a film...I saw it twice in the theater...and encouraged everyone I saw to go see that movie.

For me though it would have to be Bladerunner. I was just a teenager when it came out...but that movie and its imagery haunted and amazed me for weeks after seeing it.
The movie tanked at the box office..and now it's this HUGE cult classic...and filmmakers and advertisers have been stealing design ideas and other concepts from that film ever since.

The Last Action Hero. The critics just didn't get Arnie making fun of himself and the genre he helped make huge.
