Stem cells have two important characteristics that distinguish them from other types of cells. First, they are unspecialized cells that renew themselves for long periods through cell division. The second is that under certain physiologic or experimental conditions, they can be induced to become cells with special functions such as the beating cells of the heart muscle or the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas.

e-money's answer to what is a stem cell is very good, so I won't even try to add to it. But the other part of your question, why are some people against it, has to do with the huge debate in America over abortion. Stem cells can be derived from aborted fetuses. Therefore, no matter how many lives they would potentially save, the anti-choice people would deny that benefit to the world because in their (narrow) mind, abortion is killing.

It's the embryonic stem cell research some people have problems with, not all stem cell research. It's because the embryo is destroyed when they extract the cells from it.
