Why do lightbulbs flash blue when they go out?

When the filament breaks and there is a gap there is an electric arc that gives a blue flash appearance. That last arc destroys the filament so no more electricity can pass and so it's burned out.

Air tight flash flame as the filament contacts the framing material.
