They don't...

Mozilla is a volunteer project...
MS made IE and gives it away to make sure that they don't get competition...They saw Netscape and thought that maybe the way of the future so they protected their windows franchise.

Not all do.

IE is bundled with Windows which is sold to a) the public in shops and b) to PC manufacturers (like dell) who include the price when they sell to you.

Opera is now free to download but if you want Support (ie a helpline) then you pay for that. They make most of their money by selling special versions of opera to sit on handheld devices (so like Dell above) who pay in bulk. You can also brand a version - say for cybercafes.

Firefox is also free and is produced not-for-profit by a combination of volunteers and by donated time, people and money from corporations interested in maintaining competition and choice in the browser field and who can then use the browser on their own platforms etc.

And variations on the theme with other platforms and browsers.

From what i heard it seems that businesses will pay to put advertisements on them. Like when you get into the site then realize all of excess things that will pop up on the side. That businesses trying to get the word out to use or sell there product.

after installing mozilla firefox a prompt will ask you to support the development of the firefox software by buying some of the goodies in the mozilla online store. of course, this is not sustainable.
