Home room is where you go first thing in the day and lastly, just before going home. The teacher takes attendance both times to make sure no one is skipping school Our homeroom teacher was our spelling teacher in junior high. In homeroom you learn the announcements for the day. The homeroom teacher sometimes is the one who collects money for trips and activities. These are a few functions of homeroom that come to mind.

Every school does this differently. It's normally not a class at all, but a place people are assigned to meet at some point during the day. Students are usually assigned to homeroom by their place in the alphabet, which makes it convenient for school offices to locate students during that time. In many schools students go to homeroom first thing in the morning. At others (including mine), it's before lunch. Often meetings of school clubs and activities take place during that time, and formal attendance is taken. The time is normally less than a standard class, maybe 15 minutes or so. Homeroom can also be used as a place to take standardized tests or for materials to be handed oot. Some schools also have counseling sessions during this time.

a homeroom class at my school is just a class we go to on the first day of school to get our schedules and lockers and it lasts about 15-20 minutes, and when we get interims and school pictures we go to that class for about 15 minutes before school. You don't have homeroom everyday they will tell you when you need to go there.
