James Naismith invented the game of basketball using a peach basket as a hoop. The first official game was played Jan 20, 1892.
The NBA was originally the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and was founded in 1946 by a group of arena owners in the midwest and east coast. They set up this league as a new revenue stream for their arenas. The head of the group were the owners of Madison Square Garden in NYC.
