what is the job or responsibilities of a geophysicist in construction of bridge and in dam site investigation?

To build a bridge or damn it is v.important to know the geology of an area. There are two ways to do this. Either drill a hole and see what's there (which is very expensive) or you can do a geophysical survey using either seismic, magnetics, GPR, etc. This is far cheaper and can be done in a few weeks (or days if the area is small enough).

A geodetic enggineer will be more essential in such cases than a geophysicist, although the help of a geophysicist, such as in matter of where to build the dam, is of great help. A geophysicist's opinion can in fact stop the building of the dam, especially when the site is in close proximity to a fault line, or when the material on the site may not be able to support the buid-up of weight above it.

I guess a geophysicists job is to understand the geological properties of the earth at the particular location of construction.

Certain things must be taken into account when building these things including the make up of the ground it is to be built on. The geophysicist must consult witht he civil engineers to let them know of anything that may cause difficulty and what must be done to minimise the ffects of ground movement damaging the structure.

In investigating the geology of the area which will become load bearing under bridge supports and under the dam or lake formed. Lateral stress on the earth at the sides of a dam is a factor -sufficient stability is crucial if the dam is to stand.

Look up the failure of the Mulholland's dam. It was built on an earthquake fault which caused the dam not to be secure even without an earthquake.
