I Have no serial port on my laptop. I need to run a serial cord.?

I bought a new cord which goes from serial to USB. It's not working.
Should I be looking for a driver or something? Any advce would be appreciated.

if you;re running windows xp, it should be automatically detected but if not, you might need to re-install your mobo's usb drivers just for sure.

you can buy a USB to serial adapter (most newer laptops don't have serial ports) you can go to any electronics store
