I have never backed up my computer. I do have dvd writer, can i backup to that? Do i need a program to do it, or do i do it through windows? I want to save music, and especially photos. Any advice?

Your System Restore will cover you for your system. Merely transfer your full Photo's file to a CD. Do the same with your other files - it is not really necessary for programs as long as you have the original discs. Your music files may take several discs so make sure you do not try to put too much onto each disc as it makes the CD writer play up quite a lot............... If you can afford an external hard drive which connects to your usb port, I find that the best way. It takes everything. A 100 GB is now quite reasonable and saves messing about with discs.

Get an external hard drive. I got a 300GB one last week at Best Buy pretty cheap. Just plug into a USB port, load the included "backup helper" software (if you need it) and you're ready to back up.

You can backup in a number of Cds or you can use a removable hard drive. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful
