John went off on a tangent about football and forgot the question he was supposed to be answering.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/tangent

a tangent in this sentence means "A sudden digression or change of course: went off on a tangent during the courtroom argument."

This is joke i heard (I think its funny but if you aren't older and don't remember geometry it won't be)

Seriously do you use anything you learned in school NO!!! Remember your highschool geometry teacher telling you how to use sin (sign), cosign, and tangent. How many of you have used that? Exactly NONE OF YOU!!!
Now if you teacher would have been smart they would have said "When someone asks you to cosign don't sign (sin) and send them away on a tangent"

LOL sorry I couldn't resist.

Lots of meanings but I like the one that means "to head off the main direction of a conversation - to digress"

"That has reminded me of something else, said Bob, heading off on one of his usual tangents!
