Two ways. The first is to send a high frequency signal over the mains wiring carrying your data. The second is a wireless router. The former can now also carry phone calls as well as data - and so can the latter in the form of cordless phones. When a high frequency signal is sent over the mains. It has to be fairly high for quality and digital gives better quality. Interference comes from themostats on fridges and freezers that give out a radio signal when they cut in and out. The signal is modulated with the data signal - so the mains has to be blocked and then the modulation has to be filtered. People claim such systems turn house wiring into giant aerials transmitting HF radio waves - but I don't think they would transmit far - especially digital.
