im more interested in the witches than the reason for people enjoying the apples...what did they use the apples for?

It is fall, the apples will all have been picked and all the bruised and otherwise unstorable ones made into cider, and in the old days all cider fermented and became hard cider. Enjoy a good glass of warm spicey mulled cider, Hard cider if you can get it.
