Will it hurt anything mechanically if you put regular instead?

they have higher performance engines, usually higher compression ratios, more rapid ignition advance curves, etc. most of these will reduce the timing when the knock sensor detects inferior fuel, you might get away with it but you will notice a power loss, on the other hand it may lead to terrible pinging that may harm your engine, if it calls for premium, use it.

I run regular gas in my jeep that calls for premium only in the cooler months because of the colder air coming into the engine ( I will add octane boost if it warms up a little), I WILL NOT run it on regular during the hotter months. It all relates to computor settings from a performance aspect and my 5.9L Jeep isnt a slouch

If you want your car to run smoother & not have to worry about your sensors light coming on later on for having a low quality of gas in your engine you will put the premium gas in the tank. Premium gas has more ingredients (cleaning) to keep your car running effectively. Regular gas just have the bare minimum allocated by the govt. regulations.

They usually need premium because the compression ratio is high & regular gas will cause preignition knock. This can damage your engine over the long term and is not advisable. Plus, your car might not accelerate properly when you want it to, creating a dangerous situation.

I have 2 high performance vehicles that require premium. The engines are mades specifically for that type of fuel. If you put regular in, the engine will start to tick.

Use only fuel recommended by manufactuer. Premium fuel is required on many high performance cars due to the computer/timing calibrations. Using regular vs premium will cause valve 'rattle' and detonation problems. Much cheaper to use correct fuel vs overhauling valve train and pistons.

Most new cars computers will retard the ignition a little if they detect pinging from low grade gas. You can use it to get to the next station if there's no premium, but not all the time.

They have higher performance motors with a higher compression ratio,so they require it.You may have some slight knocking with a lower octane.

the only real difference is that premium makes your car run better...it wont hurt anything. you dont have to its just recommended
