I know what you mean, though I partially agree with the other answer which says it is over and done with, I think Americans, and us English folk should work and campaign to completely eradicate racism, before we can begin to shoulder the guilt of our slave owning ancestors.

Slavery ended back in the mid eighteen hundreds. Why is it so bad to let it stay ended ? There is no question that slavery was wrong and inhuman. It was practiced over most of the world since the beginning of time, including Africa.
When the Romans conquered a country, everything in that country was there for the profit of Rome, including all of the people. Primitive people kept slaves. It was just taken for granted in early times.
The vast majority of Americans are descended from people who came to America long after slavery was abolished. Did we gain anything from slavery ? It would be difficult to determine. America became a rich country, some of it may have been because of slavery, but not that much.
Who gained by America becoming a great nation ? Just the whites ? America has far more black millionaires than all of Africa put together. How many blacks really think they would be better off if their ancestors were never brought to America as slaves? Every black in America could have it made if he would put a little effort into it instead of bringing up slavery. Is that going to keep coming up forever ?
For further explaination ask Bill Cosby he can tell you how much is owed and why so many blacks are falling further and further behind. He studies the problem much more thoroughly than the rest of us. Listen to him. Learn from him. He's great.

The imancipation proclamation took place over 140 years ago. Yes, some fortunes were made then by slave owners. But if you claim that something that happened to your great grandfather's grandfather is still the reason that you don't live in a mansion is a pretty weak excuse. This is America - the land of opportunity. If you can't manage to get ahead, you're not trying.
And before you get all upset about a poor start or say that I don't know anything about being poor, let me run this by you: I'm 1 of 4 kids, I grew up in a single parent household, mom worked 2 jobs for most of the time I remember, the house I lived in had mice and the occasional rat running around, we often went to the public health clinic for medical care, mom made some of our clothes from scratch, she often patched the pants I tore holes in because new ones were too expensive, and I remember getting clothes and so forth at rummage sales. I didn't exactly start life with a silver spoon in my mouth. Your life may not have been rosy either, but that doesn't stop you from improving it.

Do you think that all the amenities you enjoy so much today were not do to the hard work of other people of all races and cultures, including white America? You need to quit living in the past. Sure, slavery and black oppression in this country were and, in some cases, still terrible things. But you have to understand that the white population of this country now are not responsible for bringing your ancestors to this country 400 years ago for the purpose of slavery. Lincoln freed the slaves over 200 years ago, you need to free yourself from all this hate bottled up in you. And, just so you know, I am a white man and my partner is black.

slavery is past; all the slaves are long gone.
And who would pay who? What about white or blacks that arrived after that? What about people of mixed ancestry? There are plenty of white people that did not benefit from slavery at all. My ancestry was poor, and came to the USA between 1880 and 1929.
Maybe some sort of reparations may be in order; as early attempts to build a viable black middle class from the 1890s to the 1920s were seriously undermined by those in power.

Laqueisha honey, no one is trying to sweep slavery under the carpet. It happened many years ago. We must move forward, make certain that this does not happen again. Why do you think that Dr. Martin Luther King fought so hard to try to free all men and women of color? That means getting the best education you possibly can, be loving and accept all races, educating others with your wisdom. Go to church so that you have spiritual support. Yes, American was tied to the blood, sweat and tears of many people of different races who fought for this great country that we live in. God loves you and so do I my sister.

1. I inherited nothing
2. My relatives fought for freedom
3. Why do you assume all whites are "sweeping anything under the rug"
4. You profited as well, unless that is, you would have preferred to be born in Africa. How many Blacks in America would change the past if they could?!
I am not saying it is right, but if you hate whites so much and expect us all alive today to appologize, you are wrong. Whites in other countries did not all have it well either. Get over your Blacks are the only ones violated mentality.
Hey you are alwas free to leave, I won't stop you.

"for every action there is reaction"
how about you react by moving to Africa where you don't have to deal with whites but have to deal with corrupt black people. maybe then you could "live happily ever after" in your mud hut!
