In Great Britain Thanksgiving is another name for the Harvest festival, held in Churches across the land on a relevant Sunday to mark the end of the local harvest. This tradition was taken to North America by early settlers and today in Canada and the USA this has become Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day an annual one-day holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. In the United States Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November and in Canada on the second Monday in October.

The Spanish celebrated a day of Thanksgiving in New Spain, what is now TEXAS in 1598, twenty-two years prior to the Thanksgiving by the English in 1620. Juan de Onate thanked God for having brought them across the Chihuahua desert crossing the Rio del Norte at today's San Elizario. At this celebration he also read "La Toma," taking claim to all lands, mountains, passes, etc etc etc in the name of the king of Spain. They caravaned to what is now downtown El Paso, crossed the river again calling this fording "El Paso del Rio del Norte" and went on north to found and settle at Santa Fe, New Mexico. That was the first Thanksgiving recorded in what is now known as Continental United States.
