I've worked as a teacher's assistant for 22 years. Most teachers I've worked with are nice people who are over worked and under paid. It's not that they are rude, it's just that most of them are working with little or no parental support and not much administrative support. I always made sure that my daughter had the hardest teachers I could find, that way the children didn't push her around. She was the boss in her classroom as it should be. My daughter didn't appreciate it at the time, but when she got older she did.

Most of the time it is because they are reacting to the rudeness of students. Many students do not know how to treat authority figures and often respond to them in a disrespectful way. (But then, what should we expect when we have a generation who has grown up fed on a steady diet of movies and TV where young people are shown as being disrespectful as a way of being popular.)
It's extremely hard to rise above being disrespected by students and treat them respectfully even when that is not how they treat you. Try doing it for 7-8 hours a day and see if you can be patient with them after a few days of that.
It would be so much easier if their parents would just teach them how to be respectful when they were young. It would make everyone's lives easier when they were older.

I'm not going to be popular for this answer, but I have noticed with colleagues the tendency to be rude not only to students, but to other adults. They get so used to being the only authority in their classroom that they often forget how to act civilized with other adults. It's annoying. The reason teachers are strict in their classrooms is because there HAS to be an organized system when there are 25+ different personalities in one room. It prevents chaos and increases productivity. Sometimes teachers translate this way of thinking into other aspects of their lives, and they come across as rude. Plus you kids never listen and we get irritated when you ask questions that you know the answer to. :P

because instead of teaching kids, they have to teach parents. They get frustrated because parents make lame excuses, and blame everything on the teachers. In a parents eye- teachers are the reason that our schools are failing, teachers are the reason why kids are getting into sex and drugs, teachers are the reason why kids misbehave, teachers are the reason why kids are tardy to class, etc.. If kids do well in class- they are smart kids, but if kids do poorly- it is because they have bad teachers. Teachers have alot of pressure to deal with, and no time to be nice.

I'm not rude and the people I work with aren't. And those who are rude are not real teachers! They just chose the wrong profession to raise their self-appraisal!

'cause you are dumb. and now their job relies on whether or not your dumb butt can pass a test. though they only see you 6 hours out of 24 hour day and the first 5 year of your life they never saw you at all.

Cause they want to establish their authority. If they were so nice, students would walk all over them and not take their classes seriously.
