I'm assuming you mean wealthiest had the money been converted into modern currency. According to Forbes magazine, that honor would go to John D. Rockefeller, who in the late 1800s had wealth amountin to more than 1.5% of the entire U.S. economy (compared to just .58% for Gates). In actual dollars his income was, of course, less than Gates', but in spending power it was far more.

I thought Jacki Onasiss was the richest lady, and I believe she was in the billions. Then there's Oprah, who I believe is in the billions.
