Then again, around here you can never tell weather - we had snow in may last year and another time no snow until end of december.

You've kinda answered you're own question here, ppl do say it's best in the fall- lots of trees so they're pretty as they turn, thing is when they do depends on the temperature and rain, but late october - end of november is probably good.
