Starting September and until the end of November - basically all of fall. The beginning of October is the prettiest after that it gets very cold usually so this year you've missed. Then again, around here you can never tell weather - we had snow in may last year and another time no snow until end of december.

You've kinda answered you're own question here, ppl do say it's best in the fall- lots of trees so they're pretty as they turn, thing is when they do depends on the temperature and rain, but late october - end of november is probably good.
