go to the mechanics, they are probably going to tell you that its your oxygen sensor, if its a late yr car.

if its a newer car, it could be that its just time for a oil change or new air filter, but check your owners manual first.

First off don,t listen to most of these magazine mechanics. The service engine light will not come on if preventative maintenance or an oil change is needed. If the service light comes on and off that is called a soft code, which means that something temporally went out of the cars preset range and then went back to normal. Sometimes a code will be stored and can be diagnosed. The vehicle might be fine , but lots of times it means that something is about to fail. When it does the light will come on and stay on(hard code), you can defiantly get it diaged. Oh yeah pulling the code is only the beginning of a diagnostic test. You can go to a place like Auto Zone and have an idiot that makes $5.50 a hour to pull a code with their $100 machine, and try to sell you an oxygen sensor(they always do) that probably wont fix your problem. Or go to a reputable shop and pay them to use their $10,000 or more machine, their experience and knowledge to find out for sure what the problem is

Hi there....

Anytime your check engine light comes on after initial startup, it usually means an engine control sensor is sending a trouble report to the engine control module (ECM). The ECM stores the codes, so if you run it by a Saturn dealer or a service facility with the right equipment, they'll be able to pull the diagnostic code and tell you what caused it.

Many larger parts stores also have a reading device to pull the codes too and can help you.

Hope this helps!

pollution. most of the time when that light kicks on its an oxygen sensor and if pollution levels are high and it has a few years on it it will read the pollution from the air around you that is not being changed in the engine. it thinks your car is making more pollution than it actually is. you can also get it if you change elevations rapidly. i always get it when i cross over the continental divide. if it turns off after a few minutes your fine. but if it comes on and stays on you will need some work done even if its changing the sensor.

Could be a bad sensor, Or your car is telling you that you need to take it in to get recommended preventive maintenance done
There may not be anything wrong with your car. But the technician will go over what is recommended to check at what ever mileage you at. He may check everything and find nothing wrong and reset the computer. Or the cars computer may indicate that a part or sensor is malfuntioning

Spend $70 on an OBDII scanner and you'll be able to read and reset the codes on any car in the last 11 years.

just stop driving with a "lead foot" or racing around and it will go off - also running low on gas for the first time in a while will pick up moisture from the bottom of the tank and cause a sensor reading that does that
