Does anyone know where I can use a system to verify the ID of my customers - to check they are real?

Hit their finger with a hammer and if they scream - they're real. Or if you need an ID system a simple card and card reader will do it. The card can have a magnetic strip on it that you can read a number off in to your computer - the number brings up a database record. A bar code reader will do the same job and you can print the bar codes with your ink jet printer. If your customers are trade - you could give them USB sticks free - with encypted info on that will identify them to your computer and to their own - they may thank you for that.

It depends on what kind of ID your customers are required to provide.

A UV light will usually indicate fraudulent passports & driving licences a the paper will glow and the hidden security features will not be visible. It also helps if you know how to decipher the numbers on a driving licence to identife male/female numbers and the way the date of birth is interpreted.

If looking at Bank Statements, doemsic bills etc be wary of duplicaes and never acept photocopies. Look for spelling mistakes, print that is not correctly aligned, differences in font type, spacing and print quality etc.

Never accept documents more than 3 months old and be wary of mobile phone bills.

Hope this is of some help.

You only , as far as I can see need to check that they are real, if you give them credit. If they pay you in cash, it does not matter if they are real or not, you`ve got your money. If you accept a cheque, you can always ring the customers bank and say that you have a cheque for £x s` and if the customer does not have the funds in the account, they will advise you to get cash from your customer. They will not tell you in so many words, that the cheque is no good, but you will be able to get the message from the tone of their voice.
