People in Central Asia, ca. 3000 BC or before seem to have been aware of its properties, who spread its use all over the world, including to the immediately post Proto-Indoeuropeans. The various reflexes of 'cannibis' and 'hemp' are demonstrated to NOT be of PIE origin, but represent a repeated borrowing from another culture. The wikipedia article, is less than satisfactory on the etymology of the word -- which is important to locate where its properties were first discovered.

Soma, Zoroastrian Haoma, the sacred drink to both religions, is said by some to have been based on marijuana mixed with ephedra
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soma
This suggests a Proto-Indo-Iranian origin at least for this cultural usage, which gets us safetly back to ca. 2000 BC.

There has also been some speculation that the pottery thhat gives the Corded Ware archaeological culture is name
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corded_Ware_culture
is hemp fiber, suggesting these early Indo-European language speakers may have been potheads, but it must be noted that there is a non-narcotic strain of cannnibis.

I would talk with him about what could happen to him if he gets caught. How a drug charge will follow him and prevent him from getting into a good college, getting many jobs, etc. If he's at all thinking about his future that may be enough to get him to think twice. If he's anything like my son and is in that crazy teenage boy alien phase and nothing he says has much logic at all I would just let the issue rest. Let him know that it's not what you would have chosen for him, to please be respectful enough not to use it in your home or be under the influence of it around family members, and that if he considers going beyond marijuana all you ask is he speak to you about it first. Honestly marijuana is very mild compared to what he could be doing. You don't want this to shut down the lines of communication if the bigger things come up. Kat

The earliest recorded incidence of marijuana use was written by Herodotus, the father of modern history. In the 5th century, B.C. he wrote, "Now they have a wild hemp in their country, like flax, except that the hemp grows taller and stouter by far. I grows wild and it is also sown by the Scythians, and from it the people of Thrace even make clothes... The Scythians, then, take the seed of this hemp, and creeping under the felt covering of the tent they throw the seed on the stones glowing with heat from the fire, and there it smolders and makes such a steam as no vapor-bath in Greece could surpass, and the steam makes the Scythians howl for joy."

Don't let your folks discover it first, and if you're too goofy to carry loads of it at daytime at least be so kind to share with other kids who haven't discovered it yet.
