I am trying to find a hobby/pastime to occupy my elderly grandfather during the winter. Folks at a craft store where I inquired suggested whittling (too dangerous); making model cars/planes (too small of parts); and putting together puzzles. I know puzzles seems a likely choice, but for some reason, he hates puzzles. Any other suggestions?? Thanks!

Does he like fish aquariums? (Would he be able to take care of them?) Or, does he paint or draw?

Is there a Senior Citizens Day Care Center around? They generally have indoor things to do, such as Bingo, bridge, dominoes, canasta, darts... any number of things.

Would he be interested in a video game? Does he know his way around a computer? (He could spend time here at the Yahoo! Answers site, giving out his knowledge that he's accrued over his lifetime. What was his type of business? I bet people here in Answers would have all sorts of questions he could answer and make someone's day.)

When my grandfather was living, he would help my grandmother with her yard sales. They had one going continually, adding things here and there -- they were good with plants, and it kept both of them occupied. (But, you asked about winter things...guess a garden and/or yard sale wouldn't be too good as a winter thing.)

Get him a book on world coins and some holders. Pick up a pound or so of world coins and have him look up the coins, as to country and value. The only big expense is the book, you might find a coin dealer in your area to sell you a used one.

The ability to be able to laugh at one's self at age 94 is pretty great. If he is doing this at home and not out on public, let him have his fun. I am 70 and enjoy life as the silly grandma who loves to giggle with the kids and grandkids. I am proper when I need to be, but the main thing is we sure can laugh at the silliest things. There is nothing wrong with them enjoying Queen music. Have you heard of Nickleback? I really like some of their songs, but some of their songs I don't like a lot. Be happy that your grandparents still enjoy a good laugh.

Leather work might interest him. There are simple kits available at the craft stores to get him started and if he likes it, leather and stamping tools can be ordered on line.

What about sculpting with clay? There are also "kits" of things that have all the parts, that might be good, then he would feel like he has accomplished something.

Writing his biography (memoirs) - especially naming all his parents, grandparents and siblings, their spouses and all his neices & nephews, as well as his own wife, her parents and siblings and of course his children & grandchildren.

Genealogy will love him for it.

If you have time to help - he can talk and you record it. Then you can transcribe it later.
