.....why exactly did Brutus want Caesar dead?

Well...Brutus never really seems to have a serious beef with the way that Caesar is conducting Rome's business...UNTIL Cassius gets into the picture. Cassius clearly has a far more serious personal agenda where Caesar is concerned, and he manages to persuade Brutus that Caesar is a cancer that has to be removed. Once Brutus joins the conspiracy, several other members come around...underscoring Brutus' authority as a statesman and policy-maker.

Ultimately, the case that's made against Caesar by the conspiracy is that Caesar was overly AMBITIOUS (note the number of times the word "ambition" is used in the two funeral orations), and too desirous of PERSONAL gain and aggrandizement, at the expense of the State and the People.

Caesar had been made ruler for life and Brutus was one of a group of people that wanted reform of the State. This reform would not happen with Caesar still in power, so, he had to go!
