The David Attenborough one where he shows how animals are adapting to human environments. I like it because I was amazed to watch just how intelligent other animals actually are. It showed crows who find ingenious ways of foraging in rubbish, or cracking open seeds - they drop them onto pedestrian crossings and let human feet and cars crush them, then go and feast on the remains. It also showed how bottlenose dolphins can now understand and respond to human instructions.

It also made me think how many more inventions humans can come up with, but looking more closely at the animal world. We already have sonar radars which come from bats, aqua-lungs devised from observing whales and narwhals, and (maybe?) jump-jets developed out of watching bees. What more can we invent now?

Does Meerkat Manor count as a wild life documentary? I love how they show meerkats in the wild, functioning as a family and as distinctive personalities. You really feel for them, especially when they're in danger.

The website for the Animal Planet (the channel for the show here in the US) is also pretty informative and interactive--its probably one of the few times I'd actually follow prompts to find out about animals' anatomy and habits!

I have to say March of the Penguins, purely because it broke through the US mainstream and helped deliver nature content to new audiences. I went to a preview and it was so lovely seeing young chilren sitting and watching and being fascinated by the world around them. David Attenborough, in the UK, makes by far the best nature programmes and in everything he does you get a sense of the real passion and commitment he has to our planet.
