This actually STARTED out as an urban legend, but that doesn't mean that people that hear about it should be less cautious. Many functions play on peoples fears in order to get more people to come to thier halloween function, but that doesn't mean that they are dishonest in doing this. People actually belive that razors in apples happened. Now that it is a common fear, some people may actually try it in the future.

I've heard of many instances -- one right in my own neighborhood. You've answered your own question. Only a very sick person would put an innocent child's life or safety in jeopardy. As a child, one of the things I once found in my Halloween treat bag was a mothball. So I guess these things have been going on for a long time. People who say the razor blade incidents are urban legends, have never had the experience happen to them or people they've known. I have.

Well, this is definetely not an urban legend. There was a major news story a while back about a kid who got their mouth cut up pretty bad when they bit into an apple with a razor blade in it.

Remember that 'urban legends' have to get their ideas from somewhere. Don't underestimate how sick some people can be.

This urban legend actually has it's roots in a movie, and has taken on a life of it's own ever since. In Halloween 3 Season of the Witch. THe idea was introduced then, and the news media and tv shows have carried the idea to new heights. Yeah, the one where it really has nothing to do with Michael Meyers. Ah, well. Have fun.

I think that's an old urban legend. If you put razor blades in apples the marks from them going in would be noticable, juice would be running out and I wouldn't think you could place a whole, old style blade in an apple unless it is a very large apple. I think it's just a made up story that was scary enough to repeat.

Well, maybe it happened but it was not common. If someone did that, it would certainly be reported and I do not recall reading any actual accounts of that happenning in the news.

I do recall a case where a rather put strichnine (rat poison) in his own children's candy - a Pixie Stick - back in the 1970s, at Halloween one year. Apparently, he wanted suspicion deflected away from himself for the poisoning. His plan was to blame it on unknown neighbors.

People have also put cynide, another poison in Tylenol, so they could profit from shorting or buying puts in the stock of the manufacturer.

In short, judging from statistics and research that has been done, it is probably more dangerous to walk around in the dark than to accept candy from neighbors at their own doorsteps on Halloween.

There have been a FEW cases where that has happened. But I think the Halloween paranoia has gotten a little out of hand. Eat wrapped candy, go out with a parent, and wear reflective clothing. If people do that, everything will be fine.

That happens very rarely, if at all.
Most of those type cases are usually found to be false or perpetrated by the parents of the alleged "victim" in order to gain attention from the media. You notice that they always conveniently find the tampered candy before anyone actually attempts to eat it?
Tantamount to putting severed fingers in your Wendy's chili.

Sadly, this "urban legend" is true. According to Snopes there have been documented cases of this happening. If it's any comfort, it's usually been done by kids with phenomenally bad judgment playing pranks, and not sadistic adults.

The same people that "get a kick" out of doing pranks the rest of the year. They think it's funny. If the shoe were on the other foot, some people would laugh and go on until they were hurt. Others would "squeal like a pig" because you got them back. People will be people.
