Consider this is an opportunity for the 9-year old sister to learn how to remove the cooked particles and odor from the appliance.

Wipe it out with a damp sponge, then use a mild cleaning solution with soapy water. Then it is an adults turn to add a tablespoon of ammonia to the soapy solution and wipe the inside clean.
Ammonia is too strong for children to use, but works for eliminating nasty residues and odors.

I forgot about a baked potato in the microwave and burned it. I tried everything to get the smell and the skorch stains out. Every time I used to microwave after that, the horrible smell would fill the kitchen. My suggestion is to just buy a new one, that's what I did. Watch the Sunday paper for sales.

Cut up a lemon and place half or all of the slices in a bowl or cup of water. Boil for a few minutes, let it cool down, take the water out and wipe clean with a paper towel or scrubby sponge.

The lemon acts as a deodorizer and the water will create the steam needed to help get the stuck on food, if there is any, off.

Try this -
Place a small bowl of water & vinegar (50/50) in the microwave.
Heat, uncovered, for about 30-45 seconds. The "steam" has vinegar in it. So, it helps deodorize into every corner, etc.
Wipe dry.

You might also put a small bowl of straight white vinegar in the micro, and close the door. DON'T HEAT.
Leave it overnight, or all day.
The vinegar will help neutralize the odors.
