He was a despot and mass murderer of his own people. However, if there was one redeeming quality to him, then it would be his defeat of Hitler during WWII. The war turned against Germany, when they were defeated by Stalin's military in Russia. Stalin then joined with the British and Americans in giving the coup de grace to the Germans in terms of the Yalta agreement which effectively turned the tide and allowed the allies to win.

He was the Great Butcher of the 20th Century, at least until Hitler came along and took his title. Stalins bloodletting and purges of the 20's and 30's killed at least 30 million people, mostly Christians. Did that make him important? hmmm, i don't know, but it gave him a seat at the conference table with all the other world powers.
