Their wings are going so fast..kind of like that toy you could buy at the fair,,that when you spun it around it would make a humming noise.

And I've always thought that bees buzz. Either way, anything that vibrates or moves rapidly to and fro, as wings do, transmits its vibrations to the air, where they propagate as pressure waves, and in due course reach our ears, where we perceive them as sound - because that's what sound is. The pitch of the sound relates to the wavelength of the pressure waves, which in turn is down to the speed of the vibrations, so a small insect like a gnat with fast moving wings has a high pitched whine, while a big lumbering bumblebee has slower wings and more of a deep buzz. Even slower wing beats, such as butterflies and birds, fall below the lowest pitch that our ears can detect.

yeah everyone is right it's their wings, they move at a fast enough rate to cause the sound. Bees also use the frequency of their wings to get pollen off certain flowers.

they dont physicaly make the sound. The humming noise you hear is of their wing movement, since they go at a fast rate, it makes a humming sort of noise

Becuase if it didn't hum, it'd get bored.
Here's a better question: why must some old men hum or whistle constantly? It's annoying, stop it! And some women too, but not necessarily the old ones.
