John Dos Passos was a writer who was ahead of his time. He was Hemingway's friend as you said, and Hemingway thought very highly of Dos's work.

John Dos Passos is claimed by some critics to be the greatest ever American writer. They base their claim on Dos Passos's book Trilogy 'U.S.A.'. U.S.A. was greeted as a masterpiece of literature chronicling American Society in the epic years of the 1920s when America was at a cross roads of history.

You hear little about John Dos Passos because he was most of his life a committed Socialist.
