I am looking for a cheap but useful laptop/notebook for Instant Messaging, using iTunes, and just surfing the internet.

Well there is one word in you sentence that pretty much eliminates an Apple, that would be "cheap" because that doesn't exist. The cheapest Macbook is $1099, get a Dell, you can probably pay less and more importantly you will get more for your money.

Yes, Apple laptops are very neat. I am using an Apple iBook G4. You can probably find a used Apple iBook (12" or 14" display) and not have to pay much.
The Apple laptops come with significant amount of software (for imaging, graphics, wordprocessing, web etc work) so whatever you pay for the laptop wil be enough for both hardware and software.

I have a PowerBook G4 that I use just for surfing, occasional photos and IM'ing. I bought it as a refurb from Apple and it wasn't cheap. If you want a "cheap" laptop, it would probably be better if you look for a used one.
