Actually, the story I've heard is that the woolly caterpillar stripe is wider or narrower depending on the severity of winter to come, but I'm convinced it's just an old wives tale.

Supposedly the thicker the bands of color, the more harsh the winter will be. Probably just one of those old wives' tales.

i think its just a wise tale but none the less the darker the wooley the worse the winter.

Woolly caterpillars are woolly because their entire species is that way. They are woolly no matter what weather is coming.
