As to whether or not Java is the best language to learn programming with, that's certainly debatable. You really need to start with what types of programs or systems you want to create. Different languages have different strengths and weaknesses. Java was designed for a particular purpose (portability) and has been applied in specfic areas where that was an overriding concern.

At any rate, the place to start with Java is the sun java site. There are tutorials there you can follow. The first thing you'll need to install is the Java Software development kit (SDK). To begin with you want to learn Java SE (Standard Edition). Currently that is version 5.

You also need an editor to write your code. Many pro java developers use sun's netbeans or Eclipse. You can use anything that can create an ascii file, but you'll be happier starting with one or the other. Sun provides versions of their tutorials that include the use of netbeans, so as a complete beginner I would recommend you try that, even though I personally use eclipse.

Best of luck. One thing you should know about programming, is that eventually you need to understand fundamentals like how processors and computers work, discrete math and things like base numbering systems (computers are base 2), and general math concepts. While much of programming is logic based, the application almost always includes some sort of math.

Java is ok if you look for job security, java programmers are in demand. As a language for learning I think it is a bit too steep. Learn python or ruby instead and quickly make some simple but useful applications. This will keep you motivated to keep programming. With java it will take a bit longer to learn to write something useful, it is NOT the easy way to learn programming.

You can start with Javascript and you'll need nothing more than notepad and a browser.

You can learn all the basic concepts, and then decide if you want to go further, invest money and time.

PS: dont confuse java with javascript. They are very different in how they are used. The big thing though is that most languages contain the same basic concepts, they are just implemented differently..

It depends on what kind of programming you intend on doing. If it's some kind of scripting that you want to do, then all you'll probably need is a text editor. If you want to write in a compiled language you'll need an editor and a compiler. Basically do some research online to decide what kind of programming you are intending on learning, then ask again... however by the time you've done enough research to know what you want to do, you'll probably not need to ask!
