If you're going to pay off the credit card full balance each month, then go that way, since purchasing on a credit card does give you some protections.
If you run a balance month to month, use cash if you have it, since otherwise you'll pay a lot extra for the item in interest.

I always try to pay with cash or with a check. I keep my credit cards for emergencies.

Cash is best so that you don't overrun your budget. If you need some protection from a seller the credit card is best but don't put anything on a card that you don't have money for as they are a real trap for some people.

If those are your only two choices, cash is always better.
To Mr. Thumbsdown Abuser -- If you want to debate that it's wrong to choose cash over credit, then email me. As a certified credit counselor, I'd love to know your reasoning.

cash is always better unless it is an emergency
you could wind up paying $400 for a $50 item if you pay the minimun amounts each month
