The transmission is in a 2003 Ford Focus (automatic) My dad was changing my transmission fluid last night. When he went to get the fluid he was given dexron III from our local Advanced Auto Parts store, and was told that dexron III was the correct fluid. When I looked in my owners manual it said to use mercon V

No
One is just a little thinner and provides smoother shifts
Forget which one but there is 10 quarts or more so adding 1 makes little difference.

Most cars take Dexron III that's probably why the mistake. Also some Mercon Vs are dual fluids by also including the Dexron III (in that they add the additives for both).

Check to make sure it isn't a container that contains both (as sometimes they do.. Ford sells it under their Motorcraft line as such) but if not, possible issues could happen with shift feel and such, and would be better to get the transmission flushed at a shop (where all fluid is replaced) compared to just draining and refilling (If the car has been started, the fluids have mixed)

You should flush out the Dexron III ASAP if you've added it to your vehicle. Those two fluids do not mix. I'm assuming you are referring to a Ford product that calls for Mercon V as indicated on the transmission fluid dipstick.

It is never a good Idea to be original when dealing with Automatic Transmissions. It has a lot to do with clearance's and specified viscosity's. When a specific fluid is specified, you must use that fluid.
You may not know the difference in driving at first, but in time it will gradually cause more wear and a shorter life for your transmission

Go back to the parts store and ask if they sell an additive you can add to make mercon V. I forget who makes it,but I've used it before. follow instructions on bottle.

You had better get you system flushed, you can not get it all out yourself, you will need to go to a transmission shop and have them do it.dff Only use what the car manufacturer says to use.

yes like the last guy said it will run different and will harm tranny over time, also the bad thing is mercan v is crap fliud its to thin and burns so easily at Mazda where i work, we end up flushing it at only 5-10k instead of the 30k norm.
