There was a post that may be from a former contestant that stated that they do get compensated--obviously the longer you're there, the more you get ...all the way up to the grand prize. The link is:

No, they get flown to a hotel or other place where they can stay incognito until the race ends (not necessarily until the broadcast date) to avoid revealing who won or lost. At most this is a couple of weeks, versus a couple months for Survivor.
