I hate when I'm walking on a sidewalk with trees or bushes, a yellow jacket will just out of nowhere burst out the bush or tree and get all up in your face (and I mean like inches away from your nose, I can see every black stripe on their body)! Then, I can either run in the opposite direction and look crazy or stupid or I can just try to walk around it or swat it away - and get stung. I've gotten stung on my face and neck before. Is this normal yellowjacket behavior?

In the spring and early summer when the population of the colony is low they are usually nonaggressive and you'd probably have to rough one up to get it to sting you.

However, in the fall when the colony population is high they become very aggressive and will sometimes sting you with no provacation. They will also chase you for a hundred yards until they do sting you. That's the big difference between YJ and hornets. If you get close to a hornets nest they'll chase you but once you're 15 or 20 feet away they break off pursuit and go back to the hive.

Yeah, I'll say. They do seem to follow you longer, and they seem to like to attack. Plus, they don't lose their stinger like most bees do, so they know they aren't running a risk if they sting you.
