Just keep you design simple. Do you have a theme for your business or maybe you want something up scale. Whatever, know what the theme for your business is, what kind of image do you want to project. Then keep the logo simple.
Once you know what image you want for your company, it's so easy you can do it yourself with a bit of imagination.
For instance, you want something up scale for your accounting business and the name of your company is James Jones. Just use J and a mirror image of J to the right of it. It's simple, it's classy.

Depends on how much you want to spend. I submit that one of your best resources is Logoworks.com. They have very low prices and do very high-end work. You can pay only hundreds of dollars for very comparable work to what some people pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for. I've met the owner and they are a very sound company.
