I have an apple G4 laptop, and every time I unplug it from its power cord, it automatically shuts down. You'd think that the battery would be dead, but at the top of the screen it says 99%. Then again, when I turn it over and press the button on the battery, it doesn't light up at all. But it couldn't be a dead battery, because it says 99%, right? But all the same, whenever I unplug it, it automatically shuts down and won't start again until I plug it in. :(
please help!

The battery is DEAD. Buy a new one. The charging thing is not an indication of it being alive. Don't expect a laptop battery to last more than about 3 years.

Visit http://laptops4less.com and check prices of their batteries.
Try this one at $94.95

Try to get your hands on another battery and try that. If the lights on the battery don't light up, it means there is no juice. Go to About this Mac in the Apple menu > More Info > Hardware > Power. Does the system recognize the Battery? "Battery Installed: Yes" if it's No then something is wrong with the battery connection. If Yes, check on Remaining Capacity (mAh), it should be 0 since your battery lights don't turn on. If it is check to see if your AC Charger is charging your battery with the battery installed of course. If not then you might need a new charger.

You can try resetting PRAM and PMU http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
You could also try this from Apple Support Discussions:

With the battery still in, start up the computer, log in if necessary, and get to your desktop. Close the lid so the PB goes to sleep and walk away. Don't touch it for at least 3 hours. Open the lid so it wakes from sleep, then unplug the power cord.

If those don't work, then I'm out of ideas. Other than giving Apple a call.

99% is not OK.
Battery is only having 1% power as such it shuts down.
Replace the battery.

Take it to your nearest Apple Store, sign up for an appointment at the genius bar and ask them what you can do.

Check in system preferences -- you may have it set to power down when it's unplugged from the power cable.

Is the batter even in there. If it is your battery has charged its last charge. Purchase the new battery from this site and only that site. http://www.apple.com/support/diy/

even as yours stops operating back, have somebody else attempt to get on your community. in the adventure that they could and also you may't. Then go decrease back to Apple and tell them to stop playing the "blame recreation" and connect the priority. My sister inlaw has a macbook professional and it in basic terms stops operating such as her instantaneous community even as her Dell retains on trucking. She has to reboot to get it to artwork. it really is not suitable.
