Not all voters are like this. It sounds like you are describing liberals.

At last official estimate there were some 80 million people living in the U.K, in case you didn't realise that is a huge number. It is never possible to please everyone at once, people are as diverse as the views they hold and it SHOULD be the job of the politician to implement the views of the majority of the populous. It's called social engineering.
Our political system is based on rivalry, you have the government and the opposition - one is supposed to fight against anything the other does, that's just how it is done.
Yes I do think you are right that some people hold the same opposing view - If we take the green issue as it is at the momment, most people want to save the environment and agree gas guzzling cars are no good for it; however if the government was to ban them completely there would be outrage. The fact is the government has a balancing act to perform.
As fo the dishonesty of the voters, I don't see many of them with the power to spend 56 million quid on hotels in a year or claim the average 121,000 quid (over double the MP's salary) per MP in expenses.
I don't think people are generally hypocritical either, you generally have a pressure group for everything conceivable these days and one fighting the polar opposite of what each pressure group is campaiging for - in the above gas guzzler example greenpeace would no doubt be thrilled if the government was to levy massive taxes on all 4X4s whereas the taxpayers alliance would be outraged - these are different pressure groups fighting for different things.
As far as I am concerned MPs should be there to REPRESENT their constituents not their party and should vote accordingly.

A large number of people who are not interested in who their father, grandfather etc voted for but can make up their own minds on voting will do so.The trouble is politicians are such bloody liars and in reality their manifestos contain so much written by Hans Christian Anderson that it is no wonder the electorate are confused. Most people in the real world tend to be fairly truthful but politicians do not live in the real world,so to be confronted by the truth is a traumatic experience for them.Politicians want to be all things to all men/women and that's part of the problem.

I think it's a mixture. Certainly we, the voters, are partly to blame but I don't think we are presented with real choices.
If both main parties support the invasion of Iraq, as they did, and both have similar tax policies what is the voter to do?
Votes for third parties are often considered as wasted

Ah, but what are politicians, if not the quintessence of the electorate?
People trade true democracy for the right to mandate a group of egotists to rule in their name, thus creating icons to follow, praise, and ultimately, blame.

I think we should be more worried about the people who are counting up the votes. They still count votes by hand in a lot of places and I wonder how much dishonesty is going on there.
