Full synthetic Mobil 1 is good for at least 20,000 miles, if that was all there is to it. Unfortunately the filter may not be big enough to allow good flow for that period. My passat has a very large filter compared to US cars so that it takes much more crud to block up. One US study, below, shows Mobil 1 was OK for 18,000 miles but needed a filter at 12,000.
For the sake of experimentation I ran a 1986 Audi 90CD on Mobil 1 for 40,000 miles. I eventually changed it when I was changing the plugs and air filter, it still looked like when it went in. It was my junker, I was willing to lose it to see what would happen, I don't suggest anyone else try it.
Ah, you Americans and your 3,000 mile oil changes. What a con job. My VW Passat, for example, has a 20,000 mile service interval in Europe using Castrol Syntec oil, which is almost identical to Mobil 1. In the US it magically only gets 5,000 miles on the same oil and you pay about $300 more for servicing per 20,000 miles than Europeans. BMW is slightly more honest with 15,000 mile service intervals. I am surprised there has not yet been a class action case over this robbery.

I go 9000 on sync. oils. but stll change filter at 3000 miles and add a quart sync. oil. The last filter change at 6000 miles I will add a quart regular oil at I will change everything at 9000.
