An asteroid is supposed to hit earth? Since when? If we had 10 years notice of an impending asteroid collision, we could more than easily deflect it or destroy it. The largest tested nuke was 50 megatons, but it's more than possible to scale a nuke to a gigaton or more. It would take launching a few nukes to 'push' the asteroid off course. Even a small change in it's direction over a few years would be more than enough to keep us safe. Sorry, but mankind is going to be around for a lot longer than 10 more years.

The asteroid "Apophis" has a *chance* of coming close to the Earth, but not in 2016.
In 2029, Apophis will make a close pass by the Earth, but will not hit it. What has astronomers worried is that they don't know exactly how this close interaction with Earth's gravity will affect it's orbit around the sun. Some projections for it's next approach to 7 years later (2036) are that it could hit Earth in 2036 -- but it would have to pass through an extremely narrow "keyhole" area in 2029 to do so. Astronomers will be able to better refine Apophis' orbital path projections as they track it over the next 10 years, and we'll then have a better idea of the odds of it hitting us.

*Nothing* that we know of is going to come anywhere close to Earth in 2016.

That's talk about something that makes more sense...There will be a chicken crossing the road tomorrow at 5pm with a farmers hand jabbed in his rump...this will be a sign of a necrophiliac politician who will legalize reverse discrimination on Tuesdays making it likely that Bush will tell the truth...
Hey....save the Cheerleader...save the world!!

Sorry...I'm cranky and you're question/statement incited me to angry ranting. Thanks
