You don't want to start looking for tickets too far in advance as airlines will hike up fares for whom they consider "impulse shoppers". You can start doing some analysis by checking www.farecompare.com and looking for your specific city combination (Minneapolis to Richmond). They have a chart that shows what months are usually cheaper.
Also, keep in mind that the best fares are 90% of time displayed 21 to 14 days before your desired travel date. Cheaptickets is good because they have low service fees.
If you want to get prices from different sources, I HIGHLY suggest using www.sidestep.com. It's a search engine that goes to different travel sites and grabs all the prices they have.
