I dont think your gonna get an answer that will do your homework totally. There are lots of subtle motives for holding your money.

fear of loss in investment.
need for liquidity
lack of a suitible investment vehicle
lazyness
ignorance of options
warm fuzzies a stack of cash in the bank gives you
taxation consequences
trying to anticipate market changes (kinda like liquidity i supose)

I know teachers like cut and dry answers. If you want a cut and dry answer you will probly have to consult your book or notes. The real world is not nearly as simple as its taught from books. People act irrationally sometimes.
