I thought it was because it lenghthened the season for the NFL and therefore there would be an extra week of tv revenue....my wife thinks its because there are an odd number of teams...does anyone know for sure?

There is currently an even # of teams. The true answer is twofold. It is to give an extra week of television revenue, but it is also to give an extra week of wagering. The NFL can deny it all it wants to, but betting on football is the main driving force in it's popularity.

There isn't an odd number of teams...there are 32. I always thought of it as just a week teams can use to recuperate and regroup, but the stretching out the season makes sense too. It helps both the teams and the entire franchise.

Just simply REST. Athletes need a break in between. If they shutdown the whole league for a week it would be disruptive to business. Hence NFL has a rotation so each team has a bye week at different times.

Well, with my sad Buffalo Bills with a 2-5 record and beginning to look worse and worse every week, they REALLY need the week off to regroup.

Maybe even the rest of the season. Maybe a year. After all, look what a year off in the NHL, due to the strike, did for the Buffalo Sabres

You're right. She's wrong.

The bye week was instituted long before the league had an odd number of teams. I believe one year each team got two bye weeks, but they found out it wasn't worth it and teams couldn't keep a rhythm.
