Teams play with 53-man rosters. 11 players from each team are on the field at any given time, for offense, defense, and special teams. If a team gets caught with having 12 men on the field it is a penalty. During preseason teams have more, but have to cut down to the 53-man roster requirement before regular season starts and games begin.

12 people play at a time on each team so altogether there are (12 +12 = 24) people on the field at once. There are many others on the benches as a substitute.
