I want to be able to store valuable family photos and kid's games on an external hard drive, thus freeing up my desk top's memory. Will this enhance the performance of my computer at all? Is an 80 GB external HD adequate? Thanks!

It is simply more storage space.

If your internal drive is so full that the os has trouble finding space to write cache (ie; HD is always thrashing) That is your main problem. The extra storage space will give you room to store new files, but you better uninstall big unused stuff and move files to the external HD. Then, defragment your internal HD.

Not really. Hard drive space is a lot different than RAM. As long as you have a few gigabytes free for virtual memory on your hard drive, it doesn't really matter what you have stored on it. But it's not a total waste. Backing up your data is an important thing to do. I've had several PCs die on me, and using an external hard drive is a quick and easy way to backup important things that you don't want to lose.

Internal communication can go much faster than external ones due to interference factors. So an external drive will certainly not speed up your system but is very useful to take files along with you or for backup purposes.
