I have mildly painful nipples after running for some time this morning. It is the second time this has happened. I believe it must have something to do with wet cotton rubbing when I am jogging. Anyone ever had this? What is the best prevention/cure?

I should say that I have no need for a bra as my breasts are not very big. However, I think I will try vaseline even though it is a brand name.

Taken from the BBC website:

Nipples are very sensitive and you've obviously already found out just how painful it can be when they're irritated.

You're suffering with jogger's nipple which is a very common problem for runners, particularly those who run long distance. As you run your clothing rubs against your nipples causing soreness, dryness, inflammation and bleeding. This is often much worse if the nipples are erect. For those who haven't experienced this problem, and please don't try this, imagine the effect of rubbing a piece of sandpaper up and down on your nipples.

What to wear

The best clothing material is silk because it's soft compared with modern synthetic fibres which can be quite coarse. Loose-fitting sportswear has less opportunity to rub. If you need to wear something that fits closely then many people find that good-fitting Lycra is less damaging.

Use something to protect your nipples. A plaster is a straightforward idea provided you're brave enough to remove it and some of your chest hairs, too. Surgical tape is available from the pharmacist and works in the same way but is a little bit less adhesive. Nipple guards are available for breastfeeding women who suffer the same symptoms when it's the baby sucking that causes the discomfort. Although they aren't marketed for men, there's no reason why you shouldn't try them for your problem.

A barrier cream such as those used for a baby's nappy area containing zinc is protective and soothing too. Many people use petroleum jelly for its similar benefits.

Failing all these you could always cut holes in your running top or run bare chested.

I ran a half marathon and got 'runners nipple' half way round jeez it was painful a bit of vaseline sorts it though. Its pretty common, just wear a cotton shirt or something without a motif on the nipple the stitching kills!

I run races and the best thing for joggers nipples is pure and simple "vasolene" i can 100% say this does work, it provides a barrier between what your wearing and your nipple which are sensative, if you ask other runners they will recomend the same thing, good luck

My mom was a marathon runner. She ususally applied bandaids to the nipples before going for a long run.

Why don't you just put band-aids on them. The adhesive is strong enough to hold and the pad will protect your nipples
