Good one! No I really don't feel that increasing the tax burden will hep the situation and have wondered for months now why they government has made it so difficult for us to use alternative energy sources. Maybe I'm too obtuse but my question is why don't they make it easier for us to use things like bio fuels and solar energy. Why is it that the tax on biofuels is so incredibly high? Surely to reduce tax on that and make it cheaper than "dirty" fuels would have people flocking to use it right?
The truth is that big oil, gas and other companies like that are too blooming powerful for their own good and we will end up paying more and more tax on our petrol, diesel and gas so that the government can claim to bedoing something about pollution but also satisy the greed of these companies.
It makes me mad GRRR
There are alternative out there! What can we do to get easier (and cheaper) access to them?!?!

I am encouraged by the British taking this leadership position towards a baby step to curb a main source of pollution. If every country wait to step off together, the world as a whole will never get there.
As to the question, will they really work, that depends on what your measurement is. Surely, the economic law of supply and demand says that the higher the price, the lower the consumption. So, new taxes on fuel means higher price, therefore less consumption and less pollution.

Taxes may work to an extent, but they aren't a cure all.
You're mistaken about America. We have reduced pollution here dramatically in the past 30 years. Most of the money we pay on gasoline is taxes.
But again, that's not a cure-all. People have lives to live, and if the gas tax keeps going up, we will just pay it and move on.
About this "stepping off together" business, forget it. We are not all agreed on a solution at present. Why would I "step off" with people I disagree with? They can step off (and piss off, for that matter).
Love Jack

Lets be honest in order for everyone here to stop using cars there has to be a viable alternative (not including public transport as not everyone can use this), but there is none. So how can the government punich the people by putting higer taxes on fuel when they have no choice? It is pathetic and is definitely a money making scheme as its not going to help the environment is it unless they spend this extra money on researching ideas on how we can be greener.

I'm affraid this country is a joke, the way they go about things creases me.
couldn't tell you whether it's a scheme but we should all get a say and maybe vote on whats best. you have to remember that no matter how much they decide to change, the outcome will not touch them, there lives will never change.

Without a doubt they are going to use it for extra taxation, they are always looking for more reasons to take your hard earned. The problem is if we end up paying more is it magically going to make any difference.
